For me it is always interesting to discuss things related in some way to our own life. Herzen was an emigrant like we all. In “Biloye i dumi” he compares his life, his social circle in Russia to those in the West. He also compares Russian and Western character (English, French, German, and Italian), culture, and education. I find some similarities with our constant theme of Russians and Americans. I also find that some of his characteristics are surprisingly close to ours.
